Joaquin is a small city located in the northeast corner of Shelby County, Texas. With a population of approximately 734 residents, the community is known for its quiet setting, friendly atmosphere, and strong hometown identity. Established in 1885 as a depot on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway, the city grew around land donated by early settler Benjamin Franklin Morris. Joaquin was named in honor of his grandson, and a post office was added in 1886 as the area became a shipping point for cotton and lumber.
Today, Joaquin maintains its small-town roots while supporting the needs of a modern community. The city covers about 2.3 square miles and continues to value close-knit relationships, neighborliness, and local pride. Public education is provided by the Joaquin Independent School District, which serves students from early childhood through high school.
Joaquin operates under a General Law Type A city government. The city is committed to transparent, responsible governance and works to provide essential services while preserving the traditional character that residents appreciate. From its origins as a historic rail stop to its role today as a calm, welcoming community, Joaquin reflects the resilience and community spirit found throughout rural East Texas.
